Overview of Program for 2013-2014

GGFC Travel Teams & Formative Soccer Program

New League for All GGFC Travel Teams

Beginning in the Fall of 2013, all GGFC travel teams will be playing in the New York Club Soccer League under the auspices of US Club Soccer.  Several clubs, including GGFC, are moving from the Westchester Youth Soccer League to the NYCSL because US Club Soccer has a more flexible approach to scheduling games and rostering players. From a practical perspective, the biggest differences for our families will be that “away” games will be played against teams from Brooklyn, Long Island, Westchester and even New Jersey instead of teams from Westchester only.  (We do expect to have the same number of home games at Pier 40 or Randall’s Island.) Also, league games may be on Saturday or Sunday.

During the 2013-2014 year, travel teams will participate in the New York Cup, just as we participated in the State Cup this year. Most travel teams will play in two or three tournaments a year (those have nothing to do with what league the club plays in).

From a coaching perspective, the NYCSL provides the flexibility for one GGFC team to “borrow” players from another GGFC team. The NYCSL also allows teams to make changes to rosters during the season. So if one team is suffering from injuries, or if the development of a player on one GGFC team would be greatly enhanced by a move to another GGFC team mid-season, we will now have the flexibility to make that move. Similarly, new players joining the club mid-season can be added to rosters when we are playing in the NYCSL.  Except for that, all other changes will be administrative (e.g., it will be easier to get new players into the system) and largely invisible to players and families.

Practice Structure for 2013-2014

Each travel team age group U10 through U14 will have two practices per week, as usual.  This is true during the fall, winter and spring seasons.

For players U15 through U18, there will be one mandatory practice per week during the high school soccer season, as is customary for GGFC and many other clubs.  Beginning in November, to prepare for fall college showcases, U15 through U18 players will practice two days a week.  Practices will be twice a week for the rest of the fall, winter and spring.

For players wanting more training, there will be an additional “technical session” each week.  No one is required to attend a technical session.  Everyone is welcome to attend a technical session.  Technical sessions will be organized by age groups:

• Age Bracket One:  U10, U11

• Age Bracket Two: U12, U13, U14

• Age Bracket Three: U15, U16, U17, U18

Note: Players from the U10, Formative Soccer Program, are welcome to attend the Bracket One Technical Sessions.

During the technical session, players will focus on core soccer skills in ball-handling and technique.

Travel Team Game Structure

Each age group U10 through U14 will have one league game per week, as usual, during the fall and spring seasons. Games may be on Saturday or Sunday.

For high school-age teams, U15 - U18, there will be no regular league play during the fall season. High school-age teams will participate in College Showcase Tournaments and regular league play during the spring season. Games may be on Saturday or Sunday.

Player Movement in Age Brackets with Multiple Travel Teams

U10 – U14 with Two Teams

In June, players in these age groups will be offered a roster position on a specific team. Each team will have its own coach and will typically conduct its own independent practice sessions.  Where GGFC are fortunate to have two teams in the same age bracket they will be scheduled to practice at the same time. Coaches may choose to warm-up, scrimmage or conduct other activities together as they deem appropriate.

There will be times when one team asks to “borrow” players from the other team, such as in the case of injury or expected absences from tournament play. This “borrowing” will be on a case-by-case basis and does not in any way effect a player’s regular assignment to a team. The player continues to practice and play with her regular team.

During the season, the coaching staff may determine that the development of a player or team would benefit by moving a player from one GGFC team to another. This may be because a player’s skill level or commitment is more appropriate for the other team. If so, the player will be moved and thereafter practice and play all games with their new team. In the ordinary course of events, these team changes should be infrequent.

The decision to “loan” or move a player between GGFC team is at the initiative and discretion of the Director of Coaching. Parents should not request that their child be moved from one team to another.

Where there are two teams in an age bracket each team’s coach will make an effort to be familiar with the players on both teams.

U15 through U17 - High School-Age Players

GGFC will create two or three teams from the pool of rising U15 through U17 players who are returning and/or joining GGFC in 2013-2014.

This change will give GGFC the opportunity to field a number of well balanced and highly competitive teams organized according to the ability of our players and their commitment to improve rather than age.

Players in this age group will register with GGFC in June but will not be assigned to specific teams until the fall. This will allow the coaches to evaluate the girls during the early practice sessions, which will effectively be tryouts, to determine who should play on what team.  Once the teams have been selected there will still be occasional up & down movements between the teams. As players improve they will go up a level while others move down to work on their game or regain confidence. The coaching staff will make all decisions related to team composition / movements and parents are asked to refrain from requesting team assignments for their daughter.

Note: U18 will continue to train and play as a team and are not part of this Pool.

Goalkeeper Training

We will offer goalkeeper training in both the fall and spring seasons.

Coaching Conflicts

We have heard the message loud and clear from families that there have been too many occasions where coaches have had conflicts because of their commitments to multiple teams.  We are making every effort to reduce these conflicts for the 2013-2014 year.  On the rare occasion where a conflict is unavoidable, we will make best efforts to have games covered by a coach who is familiar with the team and the players.

College Counseling

To aid players who would like to pursue playing soccer at the collegiate level, GGFC has a engaged a company called AndGo Sports to provide consulting to our players and teams.  AndGo Sports offers a range of services from introducing players and parents to the recruiting process; finding colleges and college soccer programs that would be the best fit for players; programming team and player events to increase exposure to college soccer programs of interest; and reaching out to college coaches to speak on behalf of players.  All of this is comes at no additional costs to GGFC players.  Families have an initial group meeting with AndGo Sports at the spring of the sophomore year.

The services of AndGo Sports, combined with the extensive contacts that GGFC’s Director of Coaching, Manfred Kapper has to collegiate coaching circles, ensure that GGFC players have the best support to pursue their dreams to play soccer in college and beyond.
